The verdict was announced in the Kobani Trial in which 108 people, including former HDP Co-Chairs Figen Yüksekdağ and Selahattin Demirtaş, 18 of whom are arrested. Ahmet Türk was sentenced to 10 years in prison and Figen Yüksekdağ to 19 years in prison due to “being a member of an illegal organization”.

The trial was held at Ankara 22nd High Criminal Court in Sincan Penal Institutions Campus in a hall with a capacity of 1800 people.

Here are the verdicts in the Kobani trial

  • Mardin Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Türk was sentenced to 10 years in prison for “membership in an armed terrorist organization”.
  • Former HDP MYK members Ali Ürküt was sentenced to 13 years and 4 months for “aiding the crime of disrupting the unity and territorial integrity of the state” and 4 years and 6 months for “incitement to commit a crime”, Alp Altınörs was sentenced to 18 years and 4 years and 6 months, Bülent Barmaksız was sentenced to 16 years and 4 years and 6 months for the same offenses respectively.
  • Former HDP MP Ayla Akat Ata was sentenced to 9 years and 9 months, Emine Ayna to 10 years, and former PM members Ayşe Yağcı and Aynur Aşan to 9 years each for “membership in an armed terrorist organization”. Ayla Akat Ata and Ayşe Yağcı were released.
  • Former HDP MPs Aysel Tuğluk, Altan Tan, Ayhan Bilgen and other defendants Berfin Özgü Köse, Bircan Yorulmaz, Can Memiş, Emine Beyza Üstün were acquitted of the charges against them.
  • Bülent Parmaksız was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
  • Can Memiş was acquitted.
  • Cihan Erdal was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
  • Dilek Yağlı was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
  • Emine Ayna was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Ayna’s sentence was reduced and she was banned from leaving the country.
  • Figen Yüksekdağ was sentenced to 19 years in prison for aiding the act of disrupting the unity and integrity of the state. Yüksekdağ’s detention was decided to continue. Yüksekdağ was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison on the charge of incitement to commit crime.
  • A verdict of acquittal was issued for Gülfer Akkaya.
  • Gülser Yıldırım was acquitted.
  • Gültan Kışanak, who was acquitted on the charge of “disrupting the unity and territorial integrity of the state” and sentenced to 12 years in prison for “membership of an armed terrorist organization”, was released.
  • Günay Kubilay was sentenced to 16 years in prison. Kubilay’s detention will continue. Kubilay was also sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for ‘incitement to commit a crime’.
  • Ibrahim Bilici was acquitted.
  • İsmail Şengül was sentenced to 20 years and 6 months in total.

Desired sentences

In his final opinion, the prosecutor had demanded 7 times aggravated life imprisonment for defendants Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, once each for “disrupting the unity and integrity of the state” and 6 times each for 6 people who lost their lives during the incidents.
