The plan to build a new oil refinery and petrochemical complex in the Dosso region, located in the southwest of Niger, has officially begun.
As part of the project, feasibility studies were officially launched on December 19, 2024.
This initiative is the result of a collaboration between the Nigerien government and the Canadian-based Zimar Group in the refining sector. The planned facility is expected to have a processing capacity of 100,000 barrels per day. The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding for this partnership in October.
The feasibility studies will be carried out over a three-month period in cooperation with Nigerien companies and local partners. The studies aim to assess the project’s technical, economic, and environmental viability. Upon approval of the results by the Niger Ministry of Petroleum, the parties will sign the final agreements, and construction will commence.
The construction is planned to be completed within 17 months. This new facility in Dosso, in addition to the Zinder refinery, which currently has a production capacity of 20,000 barrels per day, aims to significantly expand Niger’s oil sector. Upon completion, the project will strengthen Niger’s position in regional energy production and petrochemical activities.
