The fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival is currently underway in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, captivating audiences eager to experience diverse global storytelling. This year’s festival features over 120 films from 81 countries, including 16 competing in the Feature Film Competition.
Among the premieres is the Sudanese drama My Driver and I, which explores the evolving relationship between a driver and a young Saudi woman. Lead actor Mustafa Shehata described the film as a deeply personal and emotional story about a migrant taxi driver who forms a paternal bond with his young passenger, Salma, despite cultural and generational differences. The character, estranged from his daughter in Sudan, becomes a protective figure for Salma, entrusted by her parents in their absence.
Launched in 2021, the Red Sea Film Festival aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to enhance its influence in film, sports, and entertainment. This year’s event is bolstered by appearances from global icons such as Academy Award winners Viola Davis and Spike Lee, as well as Bollywood stars Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor.
Critics, however, suggest that such events may serve to divert attention from ongoing concerns regarding Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. The festival will run until December 14.
