The theater group consisting of students from Bitlis Ziya Eren Fine Arts High School won the first place in Turkey in the theater competition organized by Mersin Directorate of National Education.
Students participating in the theater club, which was established 7 months ago under the leadership of the school’s music teacher Ömer Erzurum, participated in the competition with the play “Death Concerto”, which they wrote themselves.
26 schools participated in the competition and the students won the first prize in Turkey and were also awarded in the categories of best director, best play, best male actor and best supporting actress.
Erzurum told reporters that they started working as a theater club in October last year.
Stating that they prepared the play with 10 students and one adult, Erzurum said, “It was impossible not to see the talent in our students. We tried to set our goal a little higher, to prepare a more professional play. In this process, not only the stage crew, but also the students worked in the back team. In 6-7 months, students learned how to prepare a play from beginning to end.”
Explaining that they participated in the Turkey-wide Inter-High School Theater Competition organized by Mersin Directorate of National Education, Erzurum stated that the students won the appreciation of the jury and the audience with their performance.
Stating that it was very important for the students to manage all the processes themselves, Erzurum said:
“When we went on stage, they took care of all the decor, costumes, light, make-up and sound themselves. This was the biggest achievement for me. Ziya Eren Fine Arts High School students now have a culture. This culture will continue to live in them even if we are not here. When we founded the club, there were students among our students who had never seen theater in their lives. As a club, we went to many plays. From now on, we aim to participate in other competitions and bring new awards to our school. The biggest gain will be for our students to acquire this culture and keep it alive.”
Sefa Ayaz, 11th grade student of the school, stated that it was a great chance for him to meet theater and said, “The 7-month process continued with intense effort and labor. It was an honor for us to be deemed worthy of certain awards by experts in this field. It is a separate pride to receive the best actor award in my first play. I had no interest in theater before this play.”
