The country made an urgent call for a ceasefire and a political solution for lasting peace.
South Africa has reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire and the initiation of a political process to ensure a just and lasting peace in Palestine and Lebanon.
In a statement marking the 47th United Nations International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, it was stated: “South Africa once again calls on the State of Israel to recognize that the only path to peace lies in a two-state solution, where Israel can live peacefully alongside a viable and fully independent Palestinian State, in line with internationally recognized parameters.”
Pretoria emphasized that the unresolved Palestinian issue, now spanning 75 years, continues to be at the heart of tensions in the Middle East.
The statement added: “On this occasion of the International Solidarity Day, we are afforded a significant opportunity to reflect on the situation of the Palestinian people and assess their needs.”
South Africa reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to solidarity, friendship, and cooperation with Palestine.
The statement further noted: “In line with South Africa’s long-term and principled support for the Palestinian people, the South African government remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at refocusing the international agenda on Palestine and revitalizing the Middle East peace process.”
The government also called on the international community to intensify efforts to assist Palestinians in realizing their aspirations for freedom, justice, and the establishment of an independent state.
