Onilu Clarifies That No Public Institutions Will Be Dissolved Under Nigeria’s Proposed Tax Reform Bill
Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), has clarified that no public institutions will be dissolved under the Nigerian Federal Government’s proposed tax reform bill.
Represented by Mr. David Akoji, the Director of Special Duties and State Operations at the NOA, Issa-Onilu made the statement during the launch of the National Sensitization Campaign in Jalingo. The campaign also addressed issues such as World HIV Day, security awareness, human rights advocacy, and the deterrence of get-rich-quick schemes.
The tax reform initiative includes four key legislative components: the Nigerian Tax Bill, the Nigerian Tax Administration Bill, the Nigerian Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill. These reforms aim to simplify the tax system, eliminate double taxation, and provide relief for low-income individuals and businesses by exempting those earning below 1 million Naira from taxes.
Issa-Onilu emphasized that tax revenues would be directed towards improving critical public services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He urged citizens to learn about the details and potential benefits of the policy.
The NOA has deployed access mechanisms across all local government areas nationwide to educate citizens about these reforms. The agency is also intensifying its efforts to address societal issues such as HIV/AIDS, human rights violations, and the allure of fraudulent get-rich-quick schemes.
Mr. Zakari Mohammed, the NOA’s Director in Taraba State, highlighted ongoing efforts to include all 16 local government areas in the state. He stressed the importance of educating the public to counter misinformation about government policies.
The campaign is a collaborative effort with health authorities and other stakeholders aimed at promoting integrity and supporting programs that offer legitimate opportunities for financial empowerment.
