There has been an overwhelmingly hot weather in Istanbul in recent days. While this sudden and sweltering weather is challenging for Istanbulites, it has been revealed that the reason is the “isobaric ridge”. Temperatures in the city are above seasonal norms due to the “isobaric ridge”.
It has been reported that Istanbul is under the influence of the heat wave coming from Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, and temperatures are above seasonal norms due to the isobaric ridge.
Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Department of Meteorological Engineering Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Toros told AA correspondent that a new heat wave has arrived in Turkey from Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
Stating that temperatures have increased for this reason, Toros stated that temperatures rose above seasonal norms at the beginning of June.
Prof. Dr. Toros pointed out that the temperature in the Marmara Region and Istanbul reached up to 32 degrees and emphasized that the temperature was much higher under the sun.
Stating that the average of the highest temperatures in June for many years in Istanbul was 26.9 degrees, Toros said, “On June 4, the temperature in Istanbul was recorded as approximately 32 degrees, although we are still at the beginning of June.”
Prof. Dr. Toros stated that temperatures will continue to be effective until the end of the week and continued as follows:
“Our country is under the influence of a high pressure extension at isobaric ridge levels. The ridge is an extension of the high pressure center on the ground. Like the high pressure center, the air collapses and heats up as it collapses. This has caused temperatures to rise. Due to the isobaric ridge with the heat wave coming from Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, temperatures in Istanbul are about 5 degrees above normal.
The extension of the high pressure area is causing temperatures to be above normal at ground level with the hot weather in the south of Turkey.
Our citizens need to be careful on these hot days. Especially the elderly and pregnant women should not go out during hot hours.”
“No precipitation expected in Istanbul”
Istanbul Aydın University Faculty Member and meteorology expert Dr. Güven Özdemir stated that African temperatures have started to make themselves felt since the first days of June.
Stating that extremely hot air currents coming from Africa and Arabia have an effect on the formation of high temperatures, Özdemir explained that this situation causes both humid air and an extreme high heat wave to emerge.
Dr. Özdemir said, “In Istanbul, temperatures will be 7-8 degrees above seasonal normals until Friday. There may be thunderstorms in the inner regions of the country on Friday, but no precipitation is expected in Istanbul. Temperatures in Istanbul are expected to drop to 27 degrees.”
