In Konya, 23-year-old Enes Çelik, who lost two fingers 9 months ago when a 350-ton press fell in the factory where he worked as a worker, had 2 fingers taken from his foot and transplanted to his hand with a successful surgery.
A 350-ton press fell on the thumbs of 2 hands of 23-year-old Enes Çelik, who works in a factory producing automotive spare parts in Konya. Enes Çelik, whose 2 fingers were severed, applied to Medicana Konya Hospital for treatment. Operator Doctor Harun Kütahya from the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department of the hospital recommended finger transplantation from foot to hand to Enes Çelik. “I didn’t expect it to gather this much”
Enes Çelik, who lost his thumb on both hands after a 350-ton press fell on his fingers, said, “I had a work accident last September. A 350-ton press fell on the thumb of both hands. It was severed at the base, I had no hope. After the first surgery, they told me about this operation. While I thought it was impossible, I can do everything by myself as before. I don’t have any pain, I can lift weights, I can write. Everything is under control now. Despite everything, do not lose hope. It can return to normal with a good teacher. I am happy with my condition, I did not expect it to recover this much. I was expecting the worst, but now I can do whatever I want.”
“We gained serious functions in their hands in about 6 months”
Noting that Enes Çelik’s hand functions were efficient after the operation, Operator Doctor Harun Kütahya said, “Hand injuries are quite common in occupational accidents. Sometimes limb losses can occur. In order to regain the functions of the hand, if possible, the severed limbs can be sewn back into place with the process we call replantation (repairing a severed part of the body together with all structures in order to regain its function). However, in cases where these are not possible, it is sometimes necessary to perform transplants such as organ transplants, such as outpatient hand-to-hand transplants, in order to restore functions and return the patient to both daily and business life. Our patient applied to us in September 2023 after a work accident in which the thumb was severed on both hands. In the consecutive process, we performed thumb transplantation procedures from both feet to both hands. After wound healing and bone fusion, we started physical therapy. Afterwards, we gained serious functions in his hands in about 6 months. We were able to bring him to the stage where he could do his daily work. In the next process, we plan to further improve these functions and return them especially to work gain.”
