Arrested defendant Burak Acar (41), who went to the house of his ex-girlfriend Bahar Torun (40), who had a restraining order against him in Adana, by breaking the electronic handcuffs on her feet and killed her with a gun in the presence of her son, was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment. The court did not reduce the sentence of the defendant due to his ‘negative’ personality.

In Yavuzlar Neighborhood of Yüreğir district, Burak Acar made a reconciliation offer to Bahar Torun, a security guard and mother of 2 children, whom he had been friends with for a while and broke up with her. However, Torun did not accept this offer. Allegedly, Acar shot and wounded Torun in the leg with a gun. He learned that Torun, who was being treated at the hospital, quit her job to cover her tracks and started working at a cleaning company. Acar found Torun and repeated his offer to reconcile.

However, Torun again responded negatively. Acar then started threatening Torun. Acar, who was electronically handcuffed, disobeyed the restraining order and went to Bahar Torun’s house on October 13, 2022. When Torun responded negatively, an argument broke out in the street. Acar opened fire at Torun with a pistol in front of his 11-year-old son. Torun was seriously wounded with bullets hitting her shoulder and back and could not be saved. The murder suspect Burak Acar was arrested in an abandoned house in Adana.

‘WE HAD DISAGREEMENTS’

The case against Burak Acar, who was charged with aggravated life imprisonment for ‘premeditated intentional killing’, 4 years imprisonment for ‘damaging public property (electronic handcuffs)’ and 3 years imprisonment for ‘buying, carrying or possessing unlicensed firearms and bullets’, was concluded at Adana 10th Assize Court. Acar, the murder suspect, said in his defense at the verdict hearing that he met and befriended Bahar Torun to get married. Stating that they had disagreements afterwards, Acar described the moment of murder as follows:

“Bahar had wrong behaviors towards me. Although I wanted to get rid of her, she would not leave me alone. She deprived me of my money, my family, my job and all my opportunities. Finally, I wanted to kill myself to get rid of him. I even wrote a letter about it, which I gave to the prosecutor’s office. I wanted to kill myself with the gun I had obtained. I made many petitions to the authorities. Finally, when I learned that he had opened fake accounts belonging to me and published images of me, I wrote these in my letter and I wanted to go by taxi and kill myself where Bahar was. Before I got out of the taxi, I saw Bahar on the street. I told her that I was going to kill myself. I put the gun to my head, and when she said, “Shoot me, you bastard, are you a man?” I fired the gun randomly towards her. One of the bullets hit her in the neck because she was leaning a little bit to block her hand towards me while firing. The handcuff was still on my leg at the time of the murder. There is no such thing as breaking it.”

‘I’LL POUR BENZINE ON HIS FACE’

Mukaddes Torun, the mother of the murdered Bahar Torun, also demanded the most severe punishment for the defendant. Grieving mother Torun stated that she did not see the incident and said, “The defendant wanted my daughter about a year ago. We did not give her to him because he had children. He was constantly after her. He was threatening her, harassing her by phone, harassing my daughter and us, threatening her by saying ‘I will pour caustic soda on her face’.”

The court sentenced Burak Acar to aggravated life imprisonment for ‘intentional murder against a woman’. The court did not reduce the sentence of the defendant due to his ‘negative’ personality. The court also sentenced Acar to 1 year and 6 months for ‘possession of an unlicensed weapon’ and 1 year for ‘damaging public property (breaking electronic handcuffs)’ and decided to continue his detention.
