The Togo government has announced a reduction in the prices of petroleum products, effective from Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
According to the statement, some products saw minor price drops, while others experienced more significant reductions.
New Fuel Prices:
- Super Unleaded Petrol: Reduced from 700 F CFA per liter to 680 F CFA (20 F CFA decrease).
- Kerosene: Remains at 650 F CFA per liter (no change).
- Diesel: Reduced from 775 F CFA per liter to 695 F CFA (80 F CFA decrease).
- Two-Stroke Mix: Reduced from 788 F CFA per liter to 769 F CFA (19 F CFA decrease).
A Breather Against Economic Pressure
This price reduction aims to alleviate the growing cost pressures, particularly for transporters and households. However, fuel prices remain significantly higher than a few years ago, when they were between 400-500 F CFA per liter. For low-income families, fuel prices continue to be a burden.
Global and Local Economic Challenges
The economic conditions in Togo have worsened due to external factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These global challenges have contributed to the rise in fuel prices.
While the government continues to maintain gas and fuel subsidies, citizens hope that this price reduction marks the beginning of broader economic recovery. Despite the uncertain global oil market, this small price decrease is seen as an effort by the government to ease the burden on the population.
