Ethiopian Minister of Industry Melaku Alebel stated that the macroeconomic reforms implemented by the government have had a positive impact on stimulating the manufacturing sector.
In light of these reforms, the Ministry organized a public-private dialogue to discuss opportunities, challenges, and potential solutions for the manufacturing sector.
Following the reforms carried out in recent months, Ethiopia has gained over 816 million USD in import substitution. The Minister emphasized that the reforms, particularly in manufacturing, exports, and foreign direct investment, have encouraged economic activity. He also noted that the increased availability of foreign currency has enabled industries that were previously inactive to resume operations.
Anna Waldamann, Head of the GIZ Ethiopia Program, positively assessed the developments in the manufacturing sector, highlighting that capacity utilization in sectors such as steel has risen from 20% to over 50%. However, Waldamann also pointed out the growing international competition and the need for reliable policies and regulations. She emphasized the importance of the ongoing dialogue between the government and the private sector to address these concerns.
Waldamann also highlighted the potential of digital tools, such as the electronic Public-Private Partnership platform, to support collaboration between the government and the private sector. These tools can play a crucial role in facilitating inter-sectoral cooperation and ensuring structured dialogue.
