Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has pardoned 54 prisoners convicted of various crimes in the Sinai Peninsula.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Tuesday pardoned 54 prisoners convicted of various crimes in the Sinai Peninsula.

A presidential statement indicated that the decision was made in response to requests from tribal leaders in Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai.

“The decision is an acknowledgment of the historic role of the people of Sinai in combating terrorism and promoting development and stability,” the statement said.

However, no further details were provided regarding the prisoners or the sentences they had received.

National Reconciliation

The Sinai Peninsula shares a border with the Gaza Strip, where more than 45,300 people have been killed since Israel’s brutal attacks began last year.

As part of efforts to promote national reconciliation, the Egyptian president has issued numerous pardon decrees in recent years, leading to the release of thousands of prisoners.
