The army took to the streets in Bolivia. Stating that the army attempted a coup, former President Evo Morales said, “We call for National Mobilization to defend democracy against the coup prepared by General Zuniga. We declare an indefinite general strike and road blockade. We will not allow the armed forces to violate democracy and intimidate the people.” “We condemn the seizure of Plaza Murillo by a group loyal to Mendez Arcos with snipers. This shows that they prepared the coup in advance. I call on people committed to democracy to defend the homeland against some military groups acting against democracy and the people.”
Bolivian President Luis Arce said, “We condemn the irregular deployment carried out by some units of the Bolivian army. Democracy must be respected.”
“A new cabinet of ministers will be formed, of course things will change, but our country can no longer continue like this,” said General Juan Jose Zuniga.
Images shared on social media showed heavily armed soldiers and armored vehicles gathering at Plaza Murillo in the capital La Paz.
