Local sources report that at least 10 people were killed in an incident in the northwest of Sokoto state.

It was reported that a number of civilians were killed and many others injured when Nigerian Air Force fighter jets mistakenly bombed two communities during an operation targeting terrorists.

The airstrikes, which took place on Wednesday, affected residents of the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in the Silame local government area of northwest Sokoto state.

Local sources told Anadolu Agency that these communities are located near the Surame Forest, known as a hideout for armed gangs referred to as bandits.

Muhammed Alim, a resident of one of the affected communities, reported that at least 10 people lost their lives in the airstrike.

Meanwhile, the head of the Silame local government area, Abubakar Daftarana, stated that efforts are ongoing to determine the full extent of casualties and damage.

Nigerian Air Force spokesperson Olusola Akinboyewa confirmed the incident and said an investigation would be conducted to determine the exact number of victims.

“The airstrikes were carried out based on reliable intelligence from multiple sources and corroborating aerial surveillance. However, reports of potential civilian harm will be thoroughly investigated,” he said.
