Brazil’s isolated tribe has been granted high-speed internet access for the first time.
Living deep in the Amazon rainforest, the Marubo people maintain a traditional lifestyle in one of the most isolated spots on the planet. Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service, launched in Brazil in 2022, has changed the lives of the tribe. Starlink antennas were placed in their village and the Marubo people were introduced to the internet.
Tsainama Marubo, a 73-year-old villager, described the benefits of the internet, emphasizing the advantages of communicating with loved ones living far away, accessing educational opportunities and sharing their way of life. However, he also mentioned some of the problems that the internet brings with it. In particular, he noted that young people have become lazy because of the internet and are concerned about preserving their traditional lifestyles.
Marubo leader Enoque Marubo stated that the internet disrupts basic life activities such as hunting and growing food. For this reason, he said, internet use in the village has been restricted and access is only allowed during certain hours.
