Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev dissolved the National Assembly and decided to hold general elections on September 1.
According to the decree on the website of the Azerbaijani Presidency, Aliyev dissolved the National Assembly, the country’s legislative body.
General elections, scheduled for November, will be held on September 1.
The Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan had appealed to President Ilham Aliyev to “dissolve the Majlis and bring forward the general elections scheduled for November by two months” due to the country’s hosting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 29 Conference of the Parties (COP 29) on November 11-22.
President Aliyev sent the National Assembly’s decision to the Constitutional Court to assess its constitutionality. The Constitutional Court ruled that the dissolution of the National Assembly and bringing forward the general elections were constitutional.
