EU leaders elected Antonio Costa as the new President of the Council of the European Union, retained EU Commission President von der Leyen and proposed Kaja Kallas as EU High Representative
European Union (EU) leaders elected former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa for the Presidency of the Council of the EU, proposed that EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen continue to serve in the new term and that Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas be appointed as the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
At the EU Leaders Summit held in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, with the participation of the heads of state or government of the Union countries, the names that will lead the EU in the next 5 years were determined after the EP elections held on June 6-9.
EU Council President Charles Michel announced on his social media account that Ursula von der Leyen was proposed to continue as President of the EU Commission for another 5 years.
Michel stated that former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa was elected as the President of the EU Council and that Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas was proposed as the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
Except Costa, the other names will need to receive a vote of confidence from the EP Plenary on July 16 in order to assume their duties.
