Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Niger’s representative and Chairman of the National Committee for the Operationalization of the Sahel States Confederation, Adani Illo, emphasized the strategic importance of the gathering. Illo highlighted the need to establish the foundations of the confederation and develop solutions to facilitate the free movement of people.
On behalf of Burkina Faso’s delegation, Saidou Zongo expressed support for AES’s objectives, committing to collaborate with member states. Zongo stated, ‘We are determined to work for the welfare of our people and will explore all alternatives supporting the core values of the confederation.’
Mali’s representative, Dr. Mahamane Amadou Maiga, underlined that the free movement of people and goods has a direct impact on citizens’ lives. He advocated for a comprehensive and sustainable approach, noting, ‘Addressing this issue in line with the integration goals of ECOWAS and the African Union will strengthen regional solidarity and trade.’
The meeting aims to develop proposals to ensure free movement in line with the confederation’s priorities and prepare draft documents for the Ministerial Conference. With the AES’s official departure from ECOWAS set for January 28, 2024, the outcomes of this meeting are expected to shape the future processes.
