Despite battling drought due to El Niño in 2024, Zimbabwe has achieved remarkable success in wheat production.

Zimbabwe has achieved a wheat harvest of over 550,000 tons, demonstrating its resilience in agricultural production despite the challenges posed by drought.

Wheat Production and Figures
• Wheat was planted on 121,900 hectares of land.
• Due to the drought, wheat supply fell short of the 2023 levels, reaching 186,682 tons.

El Niño Effects
El Niño worsened climate conditions, raising temperatures and reducing rainfall. As a result, a food security crisis is unfolding, with millions expected to be affected.

Government Intervention

Food Aid Program:
Approximately 300,000 tons of grain will be imported by March 2025.
The program aims to reach 6 million citizens with assistance.

Seed Sales:
Seed sales increased by 45%, despite the drought.
This reflects farmers’ hopes and preparations for the new season.

    Officials’ Statements
Dr. Jenfan Muswere, Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, stated that while drought has negatively impacted agricultural production, the measures taken could help mitigate the crisis’s effects.

    Outcome and Expectations
Zimbabwe’s wheat harvest success shows the effectiveness of efforts to enhance agricultural resilience despite harsh weather conditions. However, the country’s reliance on imports for food security and the long-term impacts of climate change require sustainable solutions within its agricultural policies.
