The 77th Cannes Film Festival, held in the famous French city of Cannes, kicked off on May 14. This year, 22 films will compete for the Palme d’Or at the festival, where American actress and writer Greta Gerwig is the president of the jury. The opening ceremony took place at the Grand Theater Lumiere in Cannes. Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep was given the Palme d’Or Honorary Award as the guest of honor of the festival. After the opening ceremony, the film Le Deuxieme Acte was screened.
This year’s festival has 9 jury members in addition to the jury president Greta Gerwig. Among these members is screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, wife of the famous director Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
Taking part in the festival as an important representative of Turkish cinema, Turkey is promoted with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the organization of the Boğaziçi Foundation for Culture and Arts. At the Turkish booth, the richness of Turkish cinema and examples of films with the participation of prominent names will be presented. Information about the new cinema law will also be shared.
Among the 22 films competing for the Palme d’Or at the festival are the works of many directors from various countries. The winner of the Palme d’Or will be announced at the closing ceremony of the festival on May 25.
Aiming to strengthen the presence of Turkish cinema in the international arena, Ogün Şanlıer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Boğaziçi Foundation for Culture and Arts, stated that they aim to gain more visibility on a global platform by promoting Turkey’s cultural heritage and cinema industry at the festival.
Birol Güven, Director General of Cinema at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, emphasized that the Cannes Film Festival offers an excellent opportunity to strengthen the presence of Turkish cinema in the international arena.
A special event will also be organized at the festival to provide information about Turkish cinema and filmmaking.
