A total of 1 million 314 thousand 136 traffic accidents occurred on the road network in 2023. Of these accidents, 1 million 79 thousand 65 were traffic accidents with material damage and 235 thousand 71 were traffic accidents with fatal injuries. Of the traffic accidents involving death or injury, 83.1% occurred within the settlement and 16.9% occurred outside the settlement.

Thus, while the rate of traffic accidents with fatalities and injuries per thousand vehicles was 9.0 in 2012, it became 8.2 in 2023.

In 2023, 45.5% of those killed in traffic accidents were drivers, 32.3% were passengers and 22.2% were pedestrians. Of those killed, 75.1% were men and 24.9% were women; of those injured, 68.7% were men and 31.3% were women.

For vulnerable road users, there were 2,610 deaths and 130,909 injuries in 2023. Pedestrians accounted for 22.2% of total fatalities, while motorcycle riders accounted for 15.5%. Motorcycle riders accounted for 22.8% of the injured, while pedestrians accounted for 11.6%.

When deaths were analyzed by age groups, 0-17 age group accounted for 10.1% of total deaths, 18-24 age group accounted for 13.6%, 25-64 age group accounted for 56.3%, 65 and over age group accounted for 20.0%.

When injuries were analyzed by age groups, 0-17 age group accounted for 17.8%, 18-24 age group 21.5%, 25-64 age group 53.9%, 65 years and over 6.8% of total injuries.

According to the number of vehicles involved in accidents, 52.4% of deaths occurred in single-vehicle accidents, 40.4% in two-vehicle accidents and 7.2% in multi-vehicle accidents. Injuries occurred in 53.3% two-vehicle, 39.2% one-vehicle and 7.5% multi-vehicle accidents. Among fatal injury accidents, 51.8% were two-vehicle accidents, 42.2% were single-vehicle accidents and 6.0% were multi-vehicle accidents.

In 2023, 48.5% of 389 thousand 362 vehicles involved in traffic accidents involving death or injury were automobiles, 23.8% were motorcycles, 14.0% were vans, 2.4% were minibuses, 2.3% were bicycles, 2.3% were tow trucks, 1.9% were trucks, 1.7% were buses, 0.8% were tractors and 2.4% were other vehicles.

Driver defects ranked first with 89.0%. 89.0% of the total 317,510 defects causing traffic accidents involving death or injury in 2023 were caused by drivers, 8.3% by pedestrians, 1.5% by vehicles, 0.7% by passengers and 0.4% by roads.

Of the fatal injury accidents, 65.9% occurred during daytime, 31.8% at night and 2.3% at dusk.

Most fatal injury accidents occurred in July In 2023, 10.3% of fatal injury accidents occurred in July and 5.0% in February. According to the days of the week, the most accidents occurred on Fridays with 15.0% and the least accidents occurred on Wednesdays with 13.8%.
